If you suspect a gas leak, your actions in the first few minutes matter enormously. Here's exactly what to do:

1. Don't Turn Lights On or Off: Any electrical spark — including light switches — can ignite gas. Leave switches as they are.
2. Don't Use Your Phone Inside: Step outside before calling — even a cell phone signal can potentially ignite gas in a high-concentration environment.
3. Leave Immediately: Evacuate everyone from the building right away. Don't stop to grab belongings.
4. Leave the Door Open: As you exit, leave the door open to allow ventilation. Don't prop doors with electrical devices.
5. Turn Off Gas at the Meter (if safe): If your meter is outside and you can reach it safely without entering the structure, turn the gas supply off.
6. Call from Outside: Once safely outside, call your gas utility company AND call a licensed plumber immediately.
7. Don't Re-Enter: Do not go back inside until the utility company and a licensed plumber have inspected and cleared the building.
